The new Monarch Riflescope Series features Monarch Eye Box Technology, a huge ocular with a generous field of view that provides 4-times magnification zoom range and four inches of constant eye relief. Quick-focus eyepiece allows for a crisp, detailed sight picture. Magnification reference numbers are viewable from the shooter's position thanks to Smooth Zoom Control. Standard on all Long Range Monarch riflescopes, nikon's easy-to reach dial allows you to quickly focus from a shooting position. Enhanced Mount Ring Spacing provides mounting to virtually any rifle action regardless of caliber, even magnum length actions. (2.5-10x50 may require extension rings in some cases). Ultra ClearCoat Optical System is the basis of the new Monarch scope. It consists of superfine Eco-Glass lens glass and nikon's proprietary anti-reflection multi-coating technology that boost light transmission up to its theoretical maximum - 95% One-Piece Main Body Tubes. The scope is milled from aircraft-grade aluminum for minimum weight and maximum strength and durability, and is sunshade adaptable. Monarch Riflescopes are waterproof, fogproof, and shockproof. New Monarch 5-20x44 and 6-24x50 models feature Interchangeable Turret Technology with 1/8-MOA adjustments and include low profile adjustments w/caps, target-style windage and elevation adjustment knobs and caps. I really didn't expect such a great scope for the price I paid but this scope is awesome!
Very clear and sharp,much heavier than a cheapo scope.
I really love it!
My only complaint is that a hard to find Allen Wrench wasn't included to mount it, A real odd-ball size.

A very nice, very bright and accurate scope for the money. In fact the best scope on todays market for the money. A much better scope than the low end Leupolds. It would be nice if it had a little more eye relief, but 3.6 inches is fine on my Rem Mtn Rifle LA. Although it is not US made it is not Chinese made. Still has excellent clarity in low light.

Nice eyepiece - can be adapted for normal telescopes too.
This eyepiece is actually a 7mm eyepiece. I use mine with a 1.25" adapter offered by Borg with my TMB 115 telescope.

Not pleased; returned for refund
I was disappointed in the performance of this spotting scope. The eye relief is too short, but my main complaint was that the focus is not maintained when changing the magnification setting. That is, when observing an object after properly focusing the scope, re-focusing is always required when the magnification is changed. The more the change, the more correction is needed. This is something that should not be necessary in a good spotting scope.

Useable, not great
The Alpen 15-45 x 60 spotting scope was purchased to sit on a tripod in our lakeside family room so that we could look at birds, boats on the lake, etc. The 45 deg eyepiece is useful in this setting. At 15x the spotting scope is OK, but as you increase the power the image becomes darker and harder to use. We'll probably never use the zoom feature because of this, and just treat it as a fixed 15x optic. Knowing this now, I would have purchased some other product with an angled eyepiece, even if it was more expensive.

excellent value
First, don't be fooled by the product image now offered by Amazon; this is indeed the model 728 with 45-degree eyepiece; Amazon pictures the similar model 725 with straight-through viewing. I use a spotting scope for birding, and I've been quite content with my trusty Bushnell Spacemaster (vintage 1992). But in preparation for a vacation that involves international airline flight I wanted a lightweight alternative. If I had unlimited financial resources I might have considered a few of the big-ticket products with impressive reviews, but money IS an object. But so is quality, and I knew I wanted a BAK-4 prism, multi-coated lenses (of course I would have preferred fully multi-coated), waterproof construction, compact design, light weight, and reasonably good close focus. The Alpen 728 specifications looked good, and I took a chance. I'm glad I did. This scope weighs less than two pounds, is quite compact, has a nice retractable sunshade, and delivers very good optical performance (especially when used in the range from 15X to about 30X). Light transmission is quite satisfactory below 30X, as is color rendition. I get a good sharp image. I can focus to less than 25 feet. The 18mm eye relief at 15X is quite sufficient for those of us who wear glasses, and even at 45X (with 15mm eye relief) it's still usable. The 45-degree eyepiece does facilitate shared viewing, and perhaps most importantly allows the use of a shorter tripod. I even like the threaded eyepiece cover. The cloth case is a nice touch; I'm not sure I'll ever use the tabletop tripod, but it looks like it would work for those who do use such a support. I'm not sure that sentiment will permit me me to replace the Spacemaster as my primary birding scope, but I feel quite confident that the Alpen 728 will see its share of use, even when airline travel isn't involved.

Not so bad, although the price seems somewhat unreasonable
This adapter is what it looks like - no surprises. Feels pretty sturdy (and heavy) and universal. There are many degrees of freedom. One of them allows you to pull the camera away in one motion, allowing you to use the scope alone - a useful feature. Some tightening knobs are hard to find (especially the one that holds the vertical slider), so expect some effort at learning all the operating details before becoming frustrated - it can be confusing at first. Read the manual first - it contains some important advices. But be mindful of the screw which holds the pad on which the scope is mounted - it tends to slide off if not tighten properly. I tried this adapter with Meade Redtail 60x77 scope and Canon A510 camera and got some nice pictures, although I got similarly good pictures before by simply holding the camera with my hands at scope's eye piece. The adapter is useful mostly when you need long exposure photography, like at night. Note that digiscoping works best with small objective lens cameras. If you have a large and heavy SLR and you're having a hard time shooting anything through the scope, it's probably not the adapter's fault. Try a smaller camera.

Disappointed
I purchased the Spotter for more power than my 10X42 Nikon Monarch binoculars but the optics are nowhere near as clear and sharp. Even though the image is larger, it appears out of focus it is weak and unresolved compared to the Monarch. I put it to a hard test, viewing a Space Shuttle launch from 11 miles away but I could compare the two before the launch looking at the launch pad. I was attracted by the price of the Spotter against the more expensive Nikon Fieldscopes but now I wish I had not purchased it and saved for a better scope. I know some people love these Spotters. Now that I have it I will use it in the field and I hope I am not as disappointed as I have been so far.

Nikon XL II Spotting Scope
The optical clarity of the spotting scope was quite good. I compared it to a very similar scope put out by Bushnell and found it to be noticeably better to my eyes. The image was sharper with the Nikon product at all magnifications. The Bushnell product is several ounces lighter and to a backpacker or traveller, this may count for something. Also, it seems that more care is given to minor things, like rounding the edges of the mounting block on the Nikon, and it seems to be a better made product. I think that it would have influenced my choice somewhat if I had known that the Nikon product was manufactured in China and I may not have purchased it. I also have an 80mm Swarovski scope which is quite superior to anything that I have seen but one cannot compare apples and oranges and the price of the Nikon product is quite reasonable.
